IIDEA Partnership renewed, More designs underway and SHU Racing Orchestrating the future

Another Great IIDEA

Last month the managers visited longstanding sponsor IIDEA Ltd, who are now entering their fifth year with the team. The managers got an opportunity to see the facility, discuss the teams plans for the year and how our engineers can improve their designs for manufacture. IIDEA are based at the AMRC in Sheffield and have proved to be an invaluable sponsor over their previous years with team both for their technical knowledge and their high standard of work.

IIDEA Limited is a designer and manufacturer of precision components for application in a range of markets including aerospace, energy and power, environmental and medical sectors.

Our metallurgy expertise means we are able to work in a wide range of metal types. We have also developed a significant capability in high-level design skills using engineering and materials expertise to complement our CNC and 3D CAD-CAM manufacturing capabilities.

For the 2019 season, IIDEA Ltd. manufactured SHU Racing's uprights, hubs, pedal box plate and pedals to their extremely high standards helping us to our highest ever finish at FSUK 2019.

SHU Racing are excited to once again be partnering with IIDEA Ltd. for the upcoming 2020 season and are looking forward working closely on progressing our designs for what we hope to be our best ever season. Rolling on with our designs

This week we welcomed Tom from IIDEA to the lab as our WHUBS manager, Rhys Collins, discussed our new hub design for the 2020 season with a greater focus on designing for manufacture (DfM). DfM ensures that we can realise the potential of our concepts and we consider the wider implications of how our components are to be manufactured. Working closely with IIDEA has meant that we are now able to move away from using a constant velocity (CV) joint in the rear hubs, to a trilobe bearing using a custom machined bearing housing insert to considerably reduce the overall weight.

TEDx Sheffield Hallam University

On Saturday, 9th November, Matthew Hoyle (Team Principal) and Oliver Vollans (Business Team Lead) were given the opportunity to deliver a TEDx talk at the University on the subject of ‘Orchestrating the Future’. The short presentation discussed how SHU Racing is progressing with new manufacturing technologies, and how SHU Racing gives Sheffield Hallam students the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a unique environment outside of their traditional academic setting.

It has been a privilege to be involved with this event and we would like to take this opportunity the thank Theo Nwankwo, Organiser of TEDx Sheffield Hallam University, and the rest of team who organised such a fantastic event. We hope that SHU Racing can be involved with more exciting opportunities as this in the future.
