New Year Same SHU Racing
As it is the first newsletter of the decade the whole team would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
After a well earned Christmas break, the team are back with a focus on the finish line at Silverstone in July.
There has already been lots of progress made during the first week and we can’t wait to share the rest of the process over the coming months. Azerbaijan Study Tour
On Tuesday, 21st January, SHU Racing welcomed a host of delegates from Azerbaijan, including professionals from higher education institutions and the Ministry of Education to showcase SHU Racing and the Formula Student programme.
The delegates were visiting Sheffield Hallam University as part of a UK Student and Graduate Employability Academic and Governmental Study Tour, which aims to support higher education institutions in Azerbaijan to increase the employability level of their graduates in order to give them a competitive edge as a result of their expertise in the UK field.
During the delegates' visit to the lab, the team explained the purpose of Formula Student and why it is so popular amongst the students, highlighting the importance of gaining skills outside of the typical academic environment.
We hope the delegates enjoyed their trip to Sheffield Hallam University and found their talks with SHU Racing stimulating.
Ricardo
A great way to start a new year is with a new sponsor joining the SHU Racing support network. Ricardo are a software producer that deliver virtual engineering tools to serve many different industries from automotive, to defence and energy. Their aim within the automotive sector is to support the evolution of an efficient, sustainable, low-carbon future. As the automotive industry evolves, Ricardo has grown with it and is at the forefront of research into engine, drivelines and hybrid systems. They are also looking into other new technologies such as autonomous and connected vehicles.
Within SHU Racing, Ricardo will be used by powertrain manager, Greg Last, who will use the software to ensure that the inlet and exhaust systems are refined to ensure maximum power output of our single cylinder engine. The software will also be used to ensure exhaust designs meet the required noise level of 103 dB(c) without restricting the engines air flow.
We look forward to working with the Ricardo over the coming months and thank them again for their support.
SCHAEFFLER
SHU Racing are again partnering with SCHAEFFLER for the 2020 season. SCHAEFFLER are a global company and a leader in their field. They deliver components for engines, transmissions and chassis’. Another of their specialisms is in producing bearings, and they will once again be the main supplier of the bearings required by the team.
SCHAEFFLER have contributed to Formula Student for many years and we hope that SHU Racing can continue to benefit from their sponsorship and expertise for the foreseeable future. As a company with a factory in Sheffield, some of our team members have been lucky enough to carry out their industrial placements with SCHAEFFLER, with a few going on to take up roles in the company after graduation. This has allowed us to further reap the benefits of working with them as our team members work to the same high standards as would be expected of them whilst working at SCHAEFFLER.
SHU Racing are looking forward once again work with SCHAEFFLER over the 2020 season and would like to thank them for their continued support.
Meet the Team
The Meet the Team section of our newsletter is a chance for you to gain an insight into the team and its members. This week we welcome Alice Boote, who is a part of the drivers’ environment department. Alice is also completing her dissertation on fitting an anti-roll bar to the SHU Racing 2019 car as part of her third year studies.

Hobbies and Interests: Any excuse to be outside but running and skiing are some of my favourites. I also love music and play the trumpet in my spare time.

Favourite thing about Sheffield: There are so many different things to do from shopping, to swimming to exploring the peak district.
Reasons for Joining SHU Racing: When I came to university, I was aware that I had not spent much time hands on with a car and wanted somewhere that I could learn without the pressure of assessment. Joining SHU Racing was the perfect place for me to learn and make mistakes as well as to gain a better understanding of engineering. It has also given me the chance to make friends outside of my course and to work as part of a team to achieve our best.
