Concepts to Components: Rapid Prototype Test Fitting!

With all the departments hard at work, the first prototype parts are being created to give a clearer representation of how parts will come together. These prototypes were made using 3D printers as it allows for rapid prototyping using our CAD models. Rapid prototyping is a vital tool for SHU Racing as it allows for us to test ideas and get real representations of our work that can be used to check for potential fitting issues. Space is at a premium for us this year as we are moving to a monocoque for the first time therefore it is crucial that all our parts will fit first time.

Rack mounts for our KAZ Technologies steering rack were created with the aim of test fitting components into our plywood mock-up of the chassis. These prototypes also allow for us to test our mock-up with the FSUK templates that must fit around items such as the steering rack for the car to be legal.

To better optimise the seat, both pedal bases were created and bolted into the mock-chassis. This was done so that material could be further removed from the seat with the aim of giving the driver the optimal driving position while reducing his movement over the course of a lap.

With the designs for many of our components being finalised, make sure to stay tuned on our Instagram page where we post regularly about our progression!
